If so, be sure to keep an eye out for some of my upcoming posts on books set in The Golden Triangle – a renowned travel route in Northern India that encompasses the cities New Delhi, Jaipur and Agra (home to the Taj Mahal). While researching books set in these cities, I stumbled upon the wonderful Winds of Fire series by Anju Gattani. Set in the fictional city of Raigun in Northern India, these books tell the story of a young woman, Sheetal, who is pressurised to give up the man she truly loves to enter into an arranged marriage with a wealthy businessman whose name and reputation will help maintain her family’s social status. As the narrative unfolds, we get to see the enduring consequences of Sheetal’s decision and the heavy burdens a traditional, patriarchal society imposes on her and everyone around her. Aside from its compelling plot, what I loved most about this series was the amazing descriptions of Indian cultural traditions. I was fascinated to learn about the intricacies of an arranged marriage, the conduct of an Indian wedding ceremony, and the observance of Hindu festivals such as Karva Chauth – subjects that were completely unfamiliar to me. The author also very skillfully tackles some complex and challenging themes such as domestic abuse, alcoholism, the effects of poverty, depression and trauma. As a result, I found the story deeply moving and thought-provoking. If you are looking for a real page-turner set in India that will also give you an insight into some Indian cultural traditions then I can highly recommend this series. It would also be the perfect companion for anyone planning a trip to the region! P.S. I loved this thrilling, complex follow-up to Dynasties. The writing is gripping while it immerses the reader in the culture and traditions of Indian life. Sheetal is a wonderful character in an unbearable situation of a failing marriage to a powerful and respected man in a culture where women are essentially property of their husbands and are looked down upon and blamed when their marriages fail. Add to that Sheetal’s unflinching need to protect their eight-year-old son from the influence of her domineering in-laws and you’ve got a story that grabs a hold of you and doesn’t let go until the nail biting conclusion. I do think this can be read as a standalone novel but to really appreciate Sheetal’s journey I think it’s best to start with Dynasties. This one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and that only made me really eager to read what happens next when the story continues. If you enjoy stories that shed light on different cultures and have relatable characters to root for, be sure to add this series to your TBR list.
